There was someone that wanted something to add in security for user accounts. For example, when minecraft.net goes down, they'll be able to turn off online-mode and still for the most part be confident that their account is safe.
Or perhaps you just want an added layer of security?
When a user logs in they have no rights, cannot build, cannot move, etc until they authenticate/register. The only thing this cannot prevent (because of hey0 limitations) is preventing the player from dropping items and such.
Passwords are saved as a hash (md5, feel free to use your own implementation if you wanted to). It uses a file (users.db), but if you really want it in mysql, I could do that as well sometime.
PS: players are kicked from the server when they specify an invalid password. Might add an auto ban sometime if they exceed a configurable amount..
